Work on paper, painting, rendering (CGI)
circa 1993, circa 2004, 2005, 2012, 2014
In the late 1990s Maja Weyermann started working on the renderings that should be regarded as her principal work. The artist viewed them as a way of disengaging from working with a brush, squeegee and palette knife. Yet she continued painting, and in the 2000s produced multiple small, playful pictures using gouache or acrylic paints on paper, showing flowers, trees, green meadows, fruit and vegetables.
The pictures in the Garden series, some of which were created on a trip to Istanbul in 2014, give the impression of being extremely private notes. They can be compared to a diary entry that conveys a personal mood and loosens up mind and body – in stark contrast to the renderings, which developed over months. The pictures have a naivety and freshness that recalls the paintings by the French painter Henri Rousseau. The colourful, wild floral motifs are diametrically opposed to the rigid, transparent architectural structures.
