As part of the group exhibition l'Age d'Or (2013) at the project space General Public, Maja Weyermann presented a black-and-white photograph of an earlier performance by the artist group die der art guten Freunde [the sort who are good friends]. The motif shows six men and women lined up, all nicely dressed in formal clothing. The photo is part of a series titled as time goes by (1998) for which the group explores how well-known 20th-century groups of artists presented themselves. Die der art guten Freunde reenacted some of the iconic group portraits and played around with the customs and fashions that corresponded to the relevant era and movement.
The photo that was shown in the exhibition is titled Wir. Surrealisten [Us. Surrealists] and pays homage to the surrealist movement.
Fifteen years after the original action, Weyermann recalled the event by hanging the photo in the gallery and having a performer dressed as a so-called “cigarette girl” selling postcards featuring the motif. The setting was called die Zeit in der ich noch an Wunder glaubte, oder ich weiss, es wird einmal ein Wunder geschehen [The time when I still believed in miracles, or I know that one day a miracle will happen].
